Which walk takes your fancy?
Four options, rather different underfoot
White Nancy

About this walkUse the original maps to plan and follow your walk. These notes help you choose a route, but don't replace its directions or current local signs.
The hill walk
Up to White Nancy
The Bridgend Centre's From Clarence to Nancy leaflet describes a 2.1-mile circular walk starting at Clarence Mill's Discovery Centre or the Bridgend Centre. It allows 1½ to 2 hours for the walk, including a steep climb.
There are two uphill choices in the leaflet. The less strenuous approach is still a hill walk, not a level or universally accessible route. Expect steps, gates and a stile. The strenuous approach can be muddy and slippery in wet weather, so sturdy footwear matters.
If you're walking with children or a dog, consider the steep ground and barriers before setting off. Follow current signs and keep dogs under close control around livestock.
The former railway
A little way along Middlewood Way
Middlewood Way follows the former railway between Macclesfield and Marple. The whole trail is 10 miles long, but you don't have to make a day of it: choose an out-and-back from Bollington and turn around when it suits you.
Cheshire East lists Bollington access at the Adlington Road car park. Use the council's map to plan your approach. We haven't set a distance or turnaround point for a shorter outing, so choose these before you leave.
The greenway is shared with cyclists and horse riders. Keep dogs under close control or on a lead. Although the council describes well-surfaced routes, that doesn't establish that every connecting path, ramp or village approach is suitable for a wheelchair or pushchair.

The waterside walk
Beside the Macclesfield Canal
The Canal & River Trust's published Bollington walk runs from Bridge 26A at Clarence Mill to Holehouse Lane at Whiteley Green. It's 0.8 mile one way, or 1.6 miles if you return along the same towpath.
This is a linear walk, not a circular route. Middlewood Way and the canal are separate routes, even where they run close to one another. We've not included a connecting loop here.
Take care beside the water, particularly with children and dogs. Towpath surfaces and access need checking for your own visit; we aren't describing this route as universally wheelchair or pushchair friendly.

Bridgend Heritage Trail 4
Revolving in Time
For a longer countryside walk, Bridgend Heritage Trail 4 follows the River Dean towards Rainow and returns through farmland. It starts at the Bridgend Centre, and the leaflet includes sheep markers and a children's quiz.
A note on distance: the official page and leaflet cover give 4.5 miles for the full route, or about 4 miles with the shortcut. An introductory passage calls it a four-mile walk. Those figures aren't consistent, so check the current leaflet with the Bridgend Centre before relying on a distance.
The published description is “moderately easy with occasional short ascents”, but the directions include stiles and steps, with steep steps on the full route. It's not a short, level village stroll. Consider those barriers when choosing it for children or dogs.
Before you set off
- Map first, boots next
- Download the original leaflet before leaving. Wear footwear suited to the terrain and check the weather, especially for the White Nancy climb.
- Four-legged walking companions
- Keep dogs under close control, follow local signs and take particular care around livestock. Café dog-friendliness doesn't tell you whether a trail's stiles or steps will suit your dog.
- Choose for your own party
- Check the original route's surfaces, climbs and barriers. A gentler route isn't necessarily step-free, and waterside walks need supervision.
- Plan the practical bits
- Check current parking signs and any transport arrangements before you travel. Older leaflets may include visitor information that has since changed.
